What Is a DEXA Scan?
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scanning is the clinical gold standard for body composition analysis. Using a low-level X-ray, it provides precise measurements of bone mineral density, lean muscle mass and body fat — segmented by region, including each limb, trunk and total body.
Unlike scales, BMI or bioelectrical impedance tools, DEXA provides highly accurate, reproducible data that can be tracked over time to assess the real impact of training, nutrition and clinical interventions.

Athletes

Bone Health
DEXA is the gold-standard assessment for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia and is often required prior to commencing the ONERO® program. At SSEP, we perform DEXA scans for body composition analysis only. As Exercise Physiologists, we are unable to complete diagnostic Bone Mineral Density (BMD) assessments — these are available through our Everlab service, where they are reported by a doctor. If you already have a bone health DEXA scan, our Accredited Exercise Physiologists can review the results and determine your suitability for exercise-based management and the ONERO® program.
General Health & Weight Management
Understand your body fat distribution and lean mass baseline. Track the composition of weight change over time — particularly useful for clients who are gaining muscle and losing fat simultaneously.
The Scan Process
A full-body DEXA scan takes approximately 10–15 minutes and involves lying flat on a scanning table. The dose of radiation is minimal — significantly less than a standard chest X-ray. No fasting or preparation is required, though you should avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before scanning.
Your Report
You'll receive a detailed report outlining your body composition results and a consultation with your Exercise Physiologist to interpret the findings and provide practical recommendations for training, nutrition, and health management. For bone health assessments, Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scans are available through our Everlab service, where they are reported by a doctor.

Some private health funds with extras cover may contribute, depending on your specific policy. No referral is required for a body composition Dexa scan at SSEP. For bone mineral density assessment (osteoporosis diagnosis), our Everlab service has its own pathway and the results are reported by a doctor. Our team can guide you to the right option based on what you need.
How long does a Dexa scan appointment take?
A body composition Dexa scan at SSEP runs as a 15 minute appointment. The scan itself takes around 6 minutes, with the rest of the appointment for initial setup and explanation of your results.
Is a Dexa scan safe?
Yes, Dexa scans are very safe. The radiation dose is extremely low, equivalent to roughly one day of natural background radiation. Dexa is widely used for both routine body composition assessment (offered at SSEP) and clinical osteoporosis diagnosis (delivered through our Everlab service).
