Frequently Asked Questions
What is an exercise physiologist?
An exercise physiologist is a university-qualified allied health professional who uses clinical exercise to prevent, manage and treat chronic conditions, injuries and disabilities. Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are registered with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and can deliver services under Medicare Chronic Disease Management plans, NDIS, DVA, workers compensation and most private health funds.
How is an exercise physiologist different from a physiotherapist?
Both are allied health professionals but their focus differs. Physiotherapists primarily treat acute injuries with hands-on therapy, manipulation and short-term rehabilitation. Exercise physiologists specialise in clinical exercise prescription for long-term health, rehabilitation from injury, management of chronic conditions, and athletic performance. SSEP exercise physiologists work alongside physiotherapists and medical teams when both are needed.
Do I need a referral to see an exercise physiologist at SSEP?
No, a referral is not required to book at SSEP. However, a GP-prepared Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, NDIS plan, workers compensation claim or DVA card may allow you to access subsidised sessions. Our admin team can help you understand your funding options before you book.
Is exercise physiology covered by Medicare?
Yes, exercise physiology is covered under the Medicare Chronic Disease Management program for patients with eligible chronic conditions who have a CDM plan prepared by their GP. The number of sessions covered depends on your specific plan. Bring your CDM paperwork to your initial consultation and our team will guide you through what is covered.
Does private health cover exercise physiology at SSEP?
Most major private health insurance funds with extras cover include exercise physiology benefits. Rebates vary by fund and policy. SSEP can process HICAPS claims on the spot for most funds. Contact our admin team with your fund details to confirm what your specific cover entitles you to.
How many SSEP clinics are there in Sydney?
SSEP operates 9 clinics across Sydney, including Norwest, Sydney Olympic Park, Rooty Hill, Blacktown, Lewisham, Narellan and others. Each clinic offers our Health and Rehabilitation services. Specialist programs like ONERO are offered at specific clinics. See our locations page for full details.
